Learn about Push Back Racking and what you need to know

One of the highly efficient heavy-duty rack models for storing goods in a warehouse is the Push Back rack. So, what are the characteristics, structure, and operating mechanism of this rack model? Let’s find out with Á Đông.

What is Push Back Racking?

Push Back Racking is a type of heavy-duty racking system used for pallet storage. Each rack level features supports that can slide backward or forward under the influence of forklifts or gravity.

These racks help increase the storage density of goods in a warehouse because each side of the Push Back aisle can hold 2-4 pallets. Compared to other heavy-duty rack types for pallet storage, this system can store 2-3 times more goods.

Understanding the Structure of Push Back Racking

Push Back Racking is constructed with the following basic components:

  • Uprights: These are the essential load-bearing parts that support the entire system.
  • Load Beams: Load beams distribute forces between the uprights of the rack.
  • Beam Connector: This component connects two rack frames, forming the direct placement area for pallets.
  • Column Protectors: Linking the uprights to the floor, these ensure the system remains stable.
  • Guard Rails: Installed beneath the floor level beside the uprights, these protect the rack from collisions with other equipment.
  • Guide Rails: These inclined rails assist in easy pallet sliding when goods are being loaded.
  • Pallet Stops: These are used to prevent pallets from sliding out of the system during movement and storage.

How Push Back Racking Operates

Push Back Racking operates on the Last In, First Out (LIFO) principle. In a given row of racks, the pallets loaded last are the first to be unloaded. The rack levels are slightly inclined toward the loading and unloading direction. Pallets are placed on load beams that can slide backward or forward.

Process for Loading Pallets into the Rack

Pallet 1 is placed on the load beam. When you add Pallet 2, it pushes Pallet 1 backward due to the sliding beams. This mechanism is repeated for each subsequent pallet loaded into the rack.

Process for Unloading

When unloading, after removing the front pallet, the pallets behind it will automatically slide forward under the influence of gravity. This ensures that the pallets are always at the front of the loading/unloading process.

How Is Push Back Racking Applied?

Push Back Racking is widely used in various storage facilities:

  • Storing products in logistics warehouses.
  • Storing production materials in industrial workshops.
  • Suitable for storing delicate handmade crafts such as ceramics, stone, wood, etc.
  • Commonly used in cold storage warehouses.
  • Storing boxed agricultural products such as flour, rice, and various grains.
  • Useful for storing goods packed in boxes or on pallets with fixed dimensions.
